Hair Loss

Hair loss is the undesirable and involuntary shedding of hair from the head. Women and men experience hair loss. The most common type is the so-called male pattern baldness.

Male pattern baldness is a slow process that occurs among a big proportion of men. It is more visible among some genetic and national populations. For example it is much more common among white northern Europeans and rarer among Japanese men. The balding process in men usually starts in the late 20s and the beginning of the 30s. It starts with a receding hair line of the forehead. Then balding spots start appearing on the top of the scalp or crown. Soon both patches grow and eventually meet. The, the typical u-letter form or horse shoe is formed. Gradually, male pattern baldness can lead to complete baldness. In general some hair remains but it is weak, thin and unable to regenerate as fast as normal hair.

In women hair loss appears in much later stages of their lives. Usually, it starts after the menopause and affects a smaller proportion of the population. It is characterized by a gradual thinning of the hair where the skin on the scalp is visible. In very rare cases it leads to baldness.

Hair loss has a big psychological and emotional impact of the people experiencing it. The consequences are far greater for women who feel socially outcast and completely unattractive. With men the situation has changed considerable during the last decades. It has become trendy and fashionable to have a completely bald head. Many modern celebrities, singers and athletes have such a hair style.

There is a distinct perception that balding men leave in the opposite sex. It has been observed that they are considered older, more mature, intelligent and more stable than their counterparts with a full head of hair.
